Oh, that we may know the Lord! Let us press on to know him. He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.
Hosea 6: 3 (NLT)
I woke up this morning to the gentle sound of a soft rain splashing against the windows. Raindrops dripped from new-appearing buds as the trees danced in tune to a subtle breeze. There is something soothing and peaceful about springtime rain. A peace and calmness enveloped me as I listened to the symphony of raindrops falling across the blossoming April landscape.
The parched ground soaked up the rain as fast as it fell. Tulips and daffodils stretched forth their necks drinking in the welcoming dew. As I watched the thirsty ground and flowers swallowing the life-sustaining rain, it reminded me of how desperately I need the living water when I’m spiritually parched and dry.
Isn’t it amazing how fast everything grows after a rain? Wilted flowers spring back to life and grass and weeds grow inches taller overnight when their roots soak up the nourishing water. The entire mountainside bursts forth with fresh growth after a rain.
As Christians, it’s easy to become parched spiritually if we neglect reading the Bible and praying. Instead of enjoying the abundant life Jesus wants us to have, we settle for a wilderness lifestyle – a life of unfruitful and mediocre living. We turn to things that never quench our spiritual thirst and wonder why we never feel satisfied.
We need to drink deeply of the life-sustaining water of Jesus Christ to develop a spiritually healthy life. This doesn’t mean our lives will be without struggles and problems, but we can live the abundant life Jesus desires us to have, regardless of our circumstances, when we allow our souls to soak up the living water of Christ.
Are you feeling parched and dry spiritually? Open the Bible and take some time to be still before God. Soak up his life-sustaining truth. Drink in his promises. Pray and ask him to quench your thirst. Bask in the wonder of his love. And like the dry ground and flowers drinking in the gentle spring rain, allow Jesus to saturate your weary spirit with living water.
